Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes chronic inflammation of the cells in the lining of the rectum and large intestine (colon). This inflammation can lead to sores called ulcers, which may bleed and hinders digestion. You are more likely to get ulcerative colitis if other people in your family have it.
