What is Spine Surgery?
Spine surgery refers to medical procedures aimed at correcting problems affecting the spine, including the bones (vertebrae), discs, nerves, and muscles. The spine is a vital structure that supports the body, protects the spinal cord, and allows for movement. Any issues with the spine can lead to significant pain, limited mobility, and reduced quality of life.
Spine surgery is generally considered when non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy, medications, or injections are no longer effective in managing symptoms. The decision to undergo spine surgery depends on the type of condition, its severity, and the patient’s overall health.
Common Conditions Treated with Spine Surgery
Spine surgery is performed to treat a variety of conditions, including but not limited to:
-
Degenerative Disc Disease: A condition where the intervertebral discs lose their flexibility, elasticity, and shock-absorbing abilities, leading to pain and nerve compression.
-
Herniated Disc: When the soft inner material of a disc protrudes through its outer layer, pressing on nearby nerves and causing pain, numbness, or weakness, typically in the back, neck, or legs.
-
Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spaces within the spine, which can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, causing pain, numbness, and weakness in the legs or arms.
-
Spondylolisthesis: A condition where one vertebra slips forward over the one below it, often leading to back pain and nerve compression.
-
Spinal Fractures: Injuries to the vertebrae caused by trauma or conditions like osteoporosis, which can result in severe pain or spinal instability.
-
Scoliosis: A sideways curvature of the spine, typically occurring during adolescence, which can lead to back pain, breathing problems, and difficulty in movement if severe.
-
Spinal Tumors: Both benign and malignant growths on or near the spine that can lead to pain, weakness, or numbness.
-
Infections: Spinal infections, including those in the discs or vertebrae, can cause pain, fever, and neurological issues.
-
Spinal Deformities: Conditions such as kyphosis (excessive forward curvature) or lordosis (excessive inward curvature) that can lead to significant pain and functional limitations.

They are skilled in performing complex procedures such as spinal fusion, minimally invasive spine surgery, and deformity correction. Our team is committed to providing personalized care for each patient, ensuring that the right treatment plan is chosen for every individual case.
2. Advanced Surgical Techniques
At Marengo CIMS Hospital, we utilize the latest in minimally invasive techniques, which allow for faster recovery times, smaller incisions, and less postoperative pain compared to traditional open surgery. Some of the advanced spine surgical techniques we offer include:
- Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS): This technique involves using smaller incisions and specialized instruments to treat conditions like herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis. The benefits include quicker recovery, reduced scarring, and less muscle damage.
- Spinal Fusion: A procedure where two or more vertebrae are permanently connected (fused) to eliminate motion and provide stability in cases of degenerative disc disease, spinal instability, or fractures.
- Artificial Disc Replacement: In some cases, instead of fusion, an artificial disc may be used to replace a damaged or worn-out disc to maintain spinal motion and flexibility.
- Laminectomy: The removal of part of the vertebra (the lamina) to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves, typically used to treat spinal stenosis.
- Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty: Minimally invasive procedures used to treat compression fractures of the spine, often caused by osteoporosis, by injecting a special cement into the vertebrae to stabilize them.
3. State-of-the-Art Technology
Our Spine Surgery Unit is equipped with the latest diagnostic and surgical technologies to ensure the best outcomes for our patients:
- 3D Imaging: Advanced imaging techniques such as CT scans, MRI, and X-rays allow our surgeons to visualize the spine in great detail, which helps in preoperative planning and precision during surgery.
- Intraoperative Navigation: We use real-time intraoperative navigation systems during surgeries, which allow for precise placement of screws, rods, and other implants during procedures like spinal fusion.
- Robotic-Assisted Surgery: The use of robotic technology in spinal surgery enhances the surgeon’s precision and reduces the risk of human error. Robotic systems also allow for minimally invasive surgeries with better outcomes.
4. Comprehensive Care and Multidisciplinary Approach
Spinal conditions often require care from a variety of specialists. At Marengo CIMS Hospital, we take a multidisciplinary approach to spine care, involving neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, pain management specialists, physiotherapists, and rehabilitation experts to provide holistic care that addresses both the physical and emotional aspects of the patient’s recovery.
We focus on offering a personalized care plan tailored to the individual, ensuring that each patient receives the most effective treatment for their specific condition. Whether your treatment requires surgery, physical therapy, or a combination of both, our team is here to guide you through every step of your journey.
5. Post-Operative Rehabilitation
Recovery from spine surgery can be a lengthy process, and we are committed to ensuring that our patients regain full function and mobility. Our rehabilitation program includes:
- Physical Therapy: Customized exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and posture after surgery.
- Pain Management: Our pain management specialists use a variety of techniques, including medication, nerve blocks, and alternative therapies to manage postoperative pain.
- Psychosocial Support: Dealing with spine surgery recovery can be mentally and emotionally challenging, and our team offers support to help patients cope with anxiety or depression during recovery.

At Marengo CIMS Hospital, we believe that informed patients make better decisions about their health. From pre-surgical education to post-operative guidance, we ensure that patients are fully educated about their condition, treatment options, and what to expect during the recovery process.
Key Spine Surgery Procedures
- Discectomy: Removal of a portion of a herniated disc to relieve pressure on nerves and reduce pain.
- Spinal Fusion: The fusion of two or more vertebrae to stabilize the spine in cases of degeneration, injury, or deformities.
- Laminectomy: Removal of a part of the vertebra to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves.
- Kyphoplasty: A minimally invasive procedure used to treat spinal compression fractures, often due to osteoporosis.
- Artificial Disc Replacement: Replacement of a damaged disc with an artificial one to preserve motion in the spine.
- Scoliosis Surgery: Surgical correction of spinal deformities like scoliosis using rods and screws to straighten the spine.
- Spinal Tumor Surgery: Removal of tumors affecting the spine or spinal cord, with careful planning to avoid nerve damage.
