The kneecap, also called patella, is the small bone in front of the knee. It connects the muscles of the thighbone and shinbone. And the undersides of the kneecap (and the ends of your thighbone) are covered with slippery stuff that helps bones glide smoothly as one moves the leg. The kneecap gets pulled up and down as one bends and straightens the leg.
