Sugar may not cause cancer directly. But it may reduce the impact of other nutrient – rich foods that help protect against cancer. Excessive consumption of sugar increases calorie counts, which contributes to overweight and obesity. Excess weight too leads to risk of cancer. Avoiding too much sugar therefore is advisable. Alternatively, fruit offers a “sweet” alternative in a vitamin-rich package.
