ABP

It stands for Ambulatory Blood Pressure monitoring. It is used in cases of labile blood pressure where the blood pressure may be fluctuating at irregular intervals.  The equipment for ABP monitoring consists of a small mobile phone sized device which is attached to the patient’s belt. A cuff on the patient’s arm sends in inputs of blood pressure and pulse rate to the device. These inputs are recorded every half an hour or every hour and may be transferred to a computer. The device is usually attached to the patient for 24 hours. The BP and pulse rate can be viewed as figures or a chart from a computer print out. This helps in diagnosing labile blood pressure.
